| Well I have to say, another good Barbie movie. This is different from previous offerings, what I mean is, superpowers? Does it work? The kids seemed to think so and watched the entire movie staring at the screen, with their mouths hanging open, which is a good sign. If the movie is boring they will talk amongst themselves or put the Playstation on, and come back to the movie every now and again, but not so in this case. In this movie Barbie Princess Power, Barbie gains superpowers by being kissed by a magic-induced butterfly. Barbie can then fire blasts from her hands, fly with agility and speed, and uses this to help the many townspeople. Cousin Corrine gets jealous, tracks down the same butterfly, and also gains powers, putting her in direct competition with Barbie. A bitch-battle ensues, both compete for the public attention and admiration, but eventually the girls have to put their mutual dislikes aside to defend the kingdom as a new threat arises from, The Baron. The movie reminds me of the Dreamworks’ movie How To Train Your Dragon, in that the two sides Vikings and dragons didn’t like each other, but had to put it all aside and team up to face the mother dragon, then after that they were the best of friends. It is a common template which a lot of movies have used, just Barbie Princess Power does it better than most. Overall the entire movie felt it had more depth and better development of the characters, which is appreciated. The production showed higher quality, creativity, and talent from all concerned. A really good movie, not a good as Swan Lake, or any of the classics, but a close second. For example, a few annoying points: When Super Sparkle and Dark Sparkle tried their best to defeat The Baron they could not, yet the pets step in and kick his ass in seconds? Doesn’t make sense. |
